A long time ago, along the wild mountain range of Mont-Dores (Sancy), inhabitants were rare and nature overflowing. An abundance of rocks, gigantic and steep, extended over its wild landscape. For centuries, the loyal guardians of High-Auvergne proudly protected these fields, forests, towns and villages. Today, one of their most treasured places stands high above in La Bourboule: the enchanting and magical Fairies’ Rock. Why this name, you ask? This tale will tell you its story.
Nowadays still, pixies attentively guard the underground furnace of Auvergne. How else could we explain our sleeping volcanoes, dozing off under the velvet fields? The pixies are vigilant and devoted to retain the fervent threats of eruption. If they forget, the blazing and burning of flames may spurt out of the Earth once again!
A long time ago, pixies were allies to the numerous water fairies imprisoned by the mountains. Woefully, such special beings are no longer known to our cherished region. One night, during their feast, humans scared them off and the fairies vanished for eternity. In memory of their precious existence, the marks of fairies’ still lie along the grey stone of the Fairies’ Rock. These marks, visible by no effort, reflect the prints of plates, cutlery and the pans they used for cooking. It is without a doubt that any Bourbouler could show you any day.
